What is a total eclipse of the moon?

For a lunar eclipse to be total, the moon and the sun must be perfectly aligned, with the earth between them.

The chart is not to scale. Sizes and distances have been modified to make it easier to understanding

During a total eclipse, the moon is completely submerged in the deepest shadow of our planet. In this phase, the sun's rays pass through the earth's atmosphere and project onto the moon giving it a reddish hue. This creates what is known as the "red moon" effect or, "blood moon". This total eclipse will last 1 hour and 5 minutes, according to NASA calculations
